PLACEMENT & MOVEMENT
PIECES
In the game of Chess, each player has 16 pieces:

1 King

1 Queen

2 Bishops

2 Knights

2 Rooks

8 Pawns
Hover over the black and white squares on your left and right to see the placement of these pieces on the board.
Select the tabs below to learn about the movement of these pieces on a chess board.

When the game begins, each side has eight pawns. The pawn is the weakest piece and is only worth one point. If it is a pawn's first move, it can move one or two squares forward. If a pawn has already moved, it can only advance one square at a time. Each square diagonally to the left or right is attacked (or captured).
